Chocolat Klaus

Leonetto Cappiello · 1903

A red horse and green-clad rider leap from a black background in this Cappiello edition without advertising lettering. The artist’s signature remains. Compare size previews: the 8×10 framed paper covers part of the blue border, while 6×8 has a narrow white margin.

About this work

The 1903 poster that made his name: a woman in green on a red horse, and not a square of chocolate anywhere. The joke only works if the black stays truly black — grey it out and the red horse stops rearing.
